Should You Preshrink Quilting Fabric? What Every Quilter Needs to Know

One of the most common questions new quilters ask is whether they should wash their fabric before cutting and sewing. The short answer? It depends — and if you're working with precuts, the answer is almost always no. Let's break it down.

Why Preshrink Your Fabric?

Most quilting cotton will shrink slightly the first time it's washed — typically around 2–3%. If you don't preshrink your fabric before making a quilt, that shrinkage happens after the quilt is finished. This can cause:

  • Puckering along seams
  • A slightly smaller finished size than expected
  • An uneven, wavy appearance

Many quilters actually love the crinkled, vintage look that comes from washing a finished quilt made with unwashed fabric — it gives it that cozy, well-loved feel. But if you want a smooth, flat finish, preshrinking is the way to go.

How to Preshrink Quilting Fabric

Preshrinking is simple:

  1. Wash your fabric in warm water on a gentle cycle
  2. Dry on medium heat
  3. Press with an iron while slightly damp to remove wrinkles
  4. Straighten the grain before cutting

It's a good idea to wash fabrics of similar colors together in case of any dye bleeding, especially with reds and dark blues.

What About Precuts? Do NOT Preshrink Them!

If you're working with precut bundles — like fat quarters, charm packs, jelly rolls, or layer cakes — do not wash them before use. Here's why:

  • Precuts are cut to precise measurements. Washing causes shrinkage and fraying that throws off those dimensions.
  • The edges of precuts, especially jelly rolls and charm packs, will fray badly in the wash, leaving you with unusable pieces.
  • You'll lose the crisp, accurate edges that make precuts so easy and fun to work with.

Instead, handle precuts gently and cut carefully. Once your quilt top is complete and quilted, you can wash the finished quilt — and enjoy that beautiful, slightly crinkled texture that quilters love.

Quick Reference Guide

  • Yardage fabric: Preshrink before cutting ✅
  • Fat quarters (loose): Preshrink before cutting ✅
  • Precut bundles (charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc.): Do NOT preshrink ❌

The Bottom Line

Whether you preshrink or not is ultimately a personal choice — but knowing the rules helps you make the right decision for each project. When in doubt, skip the wash on precuts and enjoy the precision they offer right out of the bundle!
